Loy Krathong
Where water and light come together
STORY
ART & CULTURE
Thailand, known as the land of waterways, is a country deeply connected to its rivers and canals. Civilizations have blossomed along these rivers for centuries, with water shaping the lifestyle and culture of Thai people. One of the most picturesque and meaningful celebrations born from this bond is the Loy Krathong Festival, held every year to pay homage to the waters that sustain life in Thailand.
The oldest recorded evidence of Loy Krathong dates back to the Sukhothai Kingdom, where the first Thai stone inscription (Stone Inscription No. 1) references this festival. This suggests that the tradition of Loy Krathong began in Sukhothai, marking it as the birthplace of this beloved festival.
Traditionally, Loy Krathong is celebrated as a way to seek forgiveness from Phra Mae Khongkha, the goddess of water, for any harm humans may have caused to the rivers and waterways. By floating a small decorated raft, or "krathong," participants symbolically release their misfortunes and past mistakes, allowing the river to carry them away. In some interpretations, Loy Krathong is also viewed as a form of Buddhist worship, where the act of releasing the krathong serves as a meditation on letting go of negative energy and embracing purity.
However, in celebrating Loy Krathong, it’s essential to embrace environmentally friendly practices. Using biodegradable materials such as banana leaves and natural decorations for the krathong helps preserve the waterways and ensures that the beauty of the festival doesn’t harm the environment.
Loy Krathong is celebrated across Thailand, wherever there are rivers, lakes, or canals. Yet, certain locations hold uniquely memorable festivities. Here are a few standout destinations known for their one-of-a-kind Loy Krathong experiences:
Sukhothai Loi Krathong and Candle Festival
The Sukhothai Loi Krathong and Candle Festival celebrates an age-old tradition rooted in Thai history, believed to have originated in Sukhothai itself, the birthplace of Loy Krathong in Thailand. Inspired by King Ramkhamhaeng’s inscription and the tale of Nang Nopphamat, the festival has been held at the historic Sukhothai Historical Park for nearly 50 years, creating one of the most enchanting settings for Loy Krathong. Thousands of lanterns illuminate the ancient city, casting a golden glow over the ruins under moonlight, while candlelit krathongs float across the serene ponds.
Chiang Mai’s Yi Peng Festival
The Yi Peng Festival, known locally as Chiang Mai’s Loy Krathong celebration, holds special significance in northern Thailand. This unique timing creates a vibrant cultural fusion, bringing Chiang Mai’s traditions to life with a distinct northern flair.
One of the most iconic aspects of Yi Peng in Chiang Mai is the release of floating lanterns, or khom loi, into the night sky. This beautiful act is seen as a way to honor the celestial Chulamanee Pagoda, believed to reside in the heavens. Alongside this, the city hosts a grand parade featuring elaborate krathongs and khom fai (lanterns) that showcase traditional Lanna artistry.
Ayutthaya
Ayutthaya, a city intertwined with waterways, offers one of the most vibrant Loy Krathong celebrations in Thailand. Known as the “Island City,” Ayutthaya’s historical area is surrounded by rivers, creating a natural moat that defines its unique geography and rich cultural heritage. These rivers have been central to Ayutthaya’s history, providing life, trade routes, and protection since the days of the ancient kingdom.
During Loy Krathong, Ayutthaya comes alive with festive energy as locals and visitors alike gather to float their krathongs along the rivers. The festival holds special significance here, as it pays homage to the rivers that have sustained this historic city.
Tak’s Loi Krathong Sai Festival
Held along the Ping River, Tak’s ‘Loi Krathong Sai Lai Prathip 1000 Lanterns’ features a royal lantern procession, traditional boat parades, and grand fireworks displays, with nightly almsgiving and a stunning spectacle of 1,000 floating lanterns illuminating the river. Other highlights include cover dance performances, string music contests, and the “Rising Star Luk Thung” folk music competition, along with vibrant local markets, food stalls, and traditional krathong crafts.
Loi Krathong Kap Kluai Mueang Mae Klong
Wat Phummarin Kudi Thong and King Rama II Memorial Park, Amphawa District, Samut Songkhram
The festival’s programme features traditional, cultural and environmentally-friendly activities – in line with TAT’s responsible tourism initiatives – that include floating of Krathong Kap Kluai or banana stem cups on the Mae Klong River, cultural performances and processions.
