Phi Phi

Beneath the Surface

STORY

See & Do

Travelers from around the world know the Phi Phi Islands well. Although this world-class destination lies within Krabi Province, the boundary itself is merely a line on the map. In reality, many visitors begin their journey to Phi Phi from Phuket.

The islands are defined by dramatic limestone landscapes—sheer cliffs rising vertically from emerald waters. On Phi Phi Leh, Maya Bay stands out as one of the most beautiful bays in the world. Nearby, Phi Phi Don offers a different atmosphere, with its sweeping bays, soft sandy beaches, and a vibrant island town full of life. It remains a favorite destination for travelers who dream of visiting Phi Phi at least once.

From a scuba diver’s perspective, Phi Phi reveals another dimension entirely. At Bida Nok, a tiny limestone islet south of the main islands, a shallow bay just 1–2 meters deep is home to dozens of blacktip reef sharks. These sharks are harmless to humans yet rarely encountered due to their shy nature and speed. With patience and a gentle approach through the coral, divers may be rewarded with the sight of these graceful creatures gliding effortlessly through the water—often too fast to capture on camera.

Along the submerged cliffs surrounding the islands lie some of Phi Phi’s most fascinating dive sites. Just outside Maya Bay, Turtle Rock (Maya Wall) reveals a hidden underwater world beneath towering rock faces. In the dim, shifting light, soft corals bloom in vivid colors alongside large sea fans, transforming the deep blue into a living canvas. Schools of fish move rhythmically through these reefs, bringing constant motion and energy to this mysterious underwater landscape.

To explore these underwater worlds, divers have several convenient options. On Phi Phi Don, local dive shops offer guided trips to nearby sites, making it easy to experience the islands at a relaxed pace. From Phuket, day trips depart regularly from Chalong Bay, connecting divers to the highlights of the Phi Phi archipelago within a single day. For those seeking a more immersive journey, many liveaboard routes across the southern Andaman Sea also include Phi Phi in their itineraries—allowing divers to experience these iconic reefs as part of a longer, deeper exploration of Thailand’s underwater landscapes.
