Rayong Botanical Garden
A Kayak Escape into Wetland Wonders
STORY
See & Do
When travelers think of Rayong, the image of sandy beaches and island getaways often comes first. Yet just a short drive inland lies another treasure of the Eastern region—the Rayong Botanical Garden. Despite its name, this is not a neatly curated park but a vast natural wetland, one of the most important in the region. Spreading out across lagoons, marshes, and open water, the area shelters countless aquatic plants and wildlife, serving as both a sanctuary and a place where visitors can discover the quiet magic of nature.
The atmosphere here is unlike a traditional garden. Instead of manicured lawns, visitors are greeted by endless stretches of freshwater swamps, floating lotus, and groves of trees reflected in still waters. Being so close to Rayong’s coastline, the wetland offers a refreshing contrast to the lively seaside—an inland world of calm and ecological richness that pairs beautifully with a beach holiday.
There are many ways to explore the garden: walking among shaded paths, cycling through open grounds, or simply relaxing by the water. But the most popular and memorable experience is kayaking. Trails range from two to six kilometers, allowing paddlers to choose their pace. Along the way, the scenery shifts constantly—from clusters of aquatic plants to open lagoons—and the highlight awaits in the melaleuca forest. Here, pale tree trunks rise straight from the water in surreal formations, creating an atmosphere that feels almost otherworldly, like slipping into a natural cathedral hidden from time.
Practical details make the visit easy. Kayaks can be rented on-site for around 100–200 THB per hour, and the kayaking rental is open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Bicycles are also available, and walking trails invite quieter exploration. The site lies only about 15 kilometers from Rayong city center and is conveniently located along the coastal road toward Chanthaburi and Trat, making it an easy addition to any trip. Visitors are advised to bring sunscreen, a hat, and drinking water, and to consider coming early or late in the day when the golden light adds even more beauty to the landscape.
Kayaking at Rayong Botanical Garden is not just an activity, but an immersion into a hidden side of the province. Between the silence of the waters, the surreal beauty of the melaleuca forest, and the sense of being embraced by untouched nature, it is an experience of pure serenity—one that lingers long after the paddles rest.
