The Flavours of Kudi Chin

A Taste of Portuguese-Siam Heritage in Bangkok

STORY

See & Do

Hidden beside the Chao Phraya River, just across from Wat Arun, Kudi Chin is one of Bangkok’s oldest multicultural communities — a neighbourhood where Thai, Chinese, and Portuguese influences have coexisted for centuries.

That long history did not only shape the architecture and atmosphere of the community. It also created flavours found nowhere else in Thailand.

Some recipes survived through generations of local families. Others slowly evolved as foreign traditions adapted themselves to Siamese ingredients, local beliefs, and Thai tastes. Today, many of these dishes can still only truly be experienced within Kudi Chin itself.

Among the most fascinating are one savoury dish and one dessert — both carrying traces of Portuguese heritage that have quietly transformed into something entirely local over time.
